PulmonaryDialysis - PartA/B
2014
---
1
Chronic renal failure is aprogressive loss
in renal function.
Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis and
renal transplant are the common
treatments for chronic renal failure.
Hemodialysis requires hospitalization and
long interaction with the patient’s blood.
Peritoneal dialysis may cause infection of
the peritoneummembrane.
The lungs are the largest particle
exchanger in the human body.
The alveolar membranehas a structure
specialized for efficient gaseous
exchange.
Pulmonary dialysis is an innovative idea of
performing dialysis through the lungs.
1. Background
To examine themechanical and
physiological ability toperform pulmonary
dialysis and todesign ademonstration
mechanical device.
2. Objective
3.1.
Mechanical simulations
Numerical technique
Geometrical model assembly:
SolidWorks3DCAD.
Simulation package:ANSYSMechanical
14.5.
The numerical simulation method:
Finite elements. Steady-state.
The elements were defined as 3D, 28000
–45000elements tetrahedral with 4nodes
each
.
Model Geometry
The lung geometrical model consists of 3
ellipses of 1 liter volume each represents
one lobe of the right lung.
CaseA: free lung.
CaseB: lung attached to the rib cageand
the diaphragm’s tendon.
For each case, 3degrees of refinement
were tested.
For caseB, both supine and sitting
positions were tested.
